Working At Home Has Its Disadvantages

Ten years working in the corporate world has given me the security of a monthly salary and some of the best perks in the industry. Even with all the pampering, I still think that the stress that you have to endure is not commensurate to what you are earning. The company just don't pay you enough with all the grief and difficulties you have to put up with. I say this because you still have to answer to a boss. Worse, if you are way at the bottom of the corporate ladder, then you are talking about strings of bosses. Lucky if you get a nice and competent boss, but more often than not, you end up with someone who has questionable credentials to lead your team.

This is the main reason why people want to have a work at home job or an online business. They want to escape the corporate jungle and do away with the office politics. The thing is that working at home is not for everyone. There are some nuances that if you are not up for it, you will find youself heading back to the corporate hell hole.

While there are many advantages of working at home, there are also some disadvantages that might just deter you from doing it full time.

1. Lots of Distractions. Working at home means that your work will have to contend with so many distractions - TV, radio, internet, babies, husband, wife, dogs, cats, telemarketers, household chores, and the list goes on...

2. Spending Longer Hours Working. Contrary to popular belief, if you work at home, you will spend longer time working. Why? because most people that work at home don't have a real schedule. Sure, they will say that they work less than 8 hours, but the truth is, with all the distractions, they end up extending their work hours to get things done.

3. Anxious To See Results. Now this applies to people doing online businesses. It doesn't matter what kind of business you are in, the fact is you are anxious to see the results of your work. This means you have to constantly check how your business is doing and the earnings you are making. Since there are real time updates, you may just be up all night staring at your computer screen. There's just no rest for the weary.

4. Less Family Time, More Work Time. With the absence of a real work schedule, you will end up working on the weekends, which eats up the time you spend with your family. Work becmes part of home life.

5. There's Always Unfinished Business. Work is never done because the Internet is open 24/7. Everything is just a mouse click away. This is always the case if your workspace is in your bedroom.

These are some of the disadvantages of working at home. Of course, you can change all these if you have a schedule in place and you stick to it. You also have to remember that the main reason why you want to work at home is to spend more time with your family. If it is not accomplishing that, then you are better off working in an office 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
